There is no single mortgage pre-approval credit score. Conventional loans commonly require 620, FHA loans can start at 580 with 3.5% down or 500 with 10% down, and many borrowers need to correct credit report errors before any score can tell the full story. Why do so many first-time buyers search for one magic number when mortgage lenders evaluate an entire financial file? A score matters, but the loan program, payment history, credit utilization, debts, and accuracy of the underlying report all influence whether a lender considers you ready for pre-approval. A borrower in the high 500s may feel shut out, yet an FHA pathway could look different from a conventional application.
